SIU won’t release name of man killed after police chase

OTTAWA — The Special Investigations Unit continues to investigate a single-vehicle fatality that occurred early Monday in Orléans after a police pursuit, though the civilian police watchdog says that at the request of the man’s family, his name will not be released. Sources say an Ottawa police officer observed a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta travelling at a speed more than 160 kilometres per hour when the decision was made just before midnight to stop the car, which did not have its lights on. Police then abandoned the chase less than a minute later when it become clear it was unsafe to continue.
