A “previously excavated construction pit” that the builders of Ottawa’s light-rail system did not know about was the likely cause of the cave-in that occurred at Waller Street near Laurier Avenue a month ago. In a report sent to city council Friday, the Rideau Transit Group said its investigation into the sinkhole found that the “tunnel crossed beneath a previously excavated construction pit” that was underneath the known city utilities. The material from that pit turned out to be “indicative of poor quality, un-compacted backfill.”
