In general, I felt the government has been loosening its grips on the churches gradually over the years. However, persecutions are still widespread and severe in many cases. Many seekers are afraid of possible consequences if they join the churches openly. In one extreme case, Christians are labelled as FLGers and arrests occur from time to time in one of the four counties the pastor is overseeing.
My home county is the one with a relatively tolerant government among the four counties but is constrained in many different ways (e.g., expansion of church building) and is watched by the big brother all the same. Do not have much information about the family churches there for now.
