ttawa – With the weather forecast over the next two days predicting heavy rainfall, the City is asking residents to take precautionary steps to protect their family and home from flooding.
Given the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority’s current flood warning and the heavy rainfall forecast, residents in New Edinburgh, Brantwood Park, Old Ottawa South and areas around Manotick, Kars, Richmond, North Gower and low lying areas along the Rideau River should expect flooding and take measures to protect their homes.
Residents can reduce the negative effects of flood damage by placing sand bags around their homes, moving valuables and important documents out of the basement, ensuring sump pumps and footing drains are connected and functioning properly and that all downspouts or water run-off is flowing to water drainage systems. More information on preventing flooding is available at ottawa.ca.
Sand and bags are available at City yards. Yards at Rideau Valley and Rogers Stevens will now open this weekend for residents to get sand if required.
City yard locations include:
Downtown Area
South Area
West Area
The City is working closely with the Rideau Valley, South Nation and Mississippi Valley Conservation Authorities to monitor and prepare for potential flooding.
The City will continue to provide updated information on ottawa.ca and Twitter.
