OTTAWA — A perfect storm of a unique set of factors — from road salt and debris in the rails to vibration from the wheels — caused malfunctioning railway crossings in Barrhaven, rail officials said Friday in a long-awaited technical briefing at city hall. Officials from Via Rail and RailTerm, the company tasked with maintaining the crossings, said the high number of malfunctions has been caused by debris, road salt and water in the rails, extra hydro loads on nearby wires affecting the signals, and vibrations from trains themselves setting off the auto-warning device after a train has travelled through a crossing.
