Recommendations from a coroner’s inquest into the choking death of teenage prisoner Ashley Smith has prompted a new pilot project to send some of the most severely mentally ill female offenders to provincial treatment centres. Federal Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney announced Thursday an “action plan” for improving treatment of mentally ill inmates that includes the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group’s Brockville Mental Health Centre providing two beds to treat federal female offenders with serious mental health needs.
