Ottawa – Friday, May 9 is Canada’s National Day of Honour, a day set aside by the Government of Canada to mark the end of Canada’s military mission in Afghanistan. As part of National Day of Honour activities, the Soldier On Afghanistan Relay has been making its way from Trenton to Ottawa since May 4.
The relay is symbolic of the resolve of Canadians to persevere over hardship, the strength of the Canadian Armed Forces and its supporting communities.
Thursday, May 8 – Soldier On Afghanistan Relay
Mayor Jim Watson will welcome the men and women of the Soldier On Afghanistan Relay as they arrive at Marion Dewar Plaza, at Ottawa City Hall, Thursday afternoon.

Friday, May 9 - National Day of Honour
Ottawa residents travelling downtown Friday, May 9, 2014, may experience some minor traffic impacts from the National Day of Honour ceremonies on Parliament Hill.
A parade of soldiers will depart from the Canadian War Museum at 12:30 p.m. and follow Wellington Street to arrive at Parliament Hill for a ceremony at 1 p.m. The ceremony will include a two-minute moment of silence at 1:30 p.m. The ceremony will also include a 21-gun salute and two fly-pasts.
Commuters may be affected in the following ways Friday afternoon:

- Ottawa police will direct traffic along the parade route.
- OC Transpo drivers have the option of stopping their buses at 1:30 p.m. for up to two minutes, where and if it is safe to do so.
