Ottawa – In partnership with local sports retailers, Ottawa Public Health (OPH) is coordinating two days of helmet discounts and free bike checkups with the Gear Up, Check Up and Rideinitiative. On May 10 and 11, residents can visit 37 locations across Ottawa to get a discount on a new helmet, with some locations offering free bike check-ups.

In Ontario, it is mandatory for anyone under the age of 18 to wear a certified helmet while riding a bicycle.
OPH recommends that all residents – no matter the age – wear a helmet while taking part in recreational activities like cycling, skateboarding and in-line skating to protect against potential serious head injury. Each year, about 1,500 people in Ottawa go to an emergency room because of a cycling injury, and 350 of these visits are the result of a head injury.

If you are looking for a new helmet or want to replace an old one, please visit one of the 37 locations offering discounts at www.adoptahelmet.com.

The month of May also marks Bike to Work Month, an annual event that challenges residents and workplaces to explore cycling to work during the month of May. Participants can register individually or as a workplace on ottawa.ca/biketowork, and be automatically eligible to win many prizes. The month-long campaign will also feature a wide selection of cycling-related events including Ottawa Public Health’s Gear Up, Check Up and Ride.

For more information on choosing the right helmet and fitting it properly, please visit ottawa.ca/health or call the Ottawa Public Health Information Line at 613-580-6744. You can also connect with OPH on Facebook, Twitter (@ottawahealth) and now on Pinterest.
