Ottawa – Today, the City of Ottawa recognized at the 24th annual Transecure Awards ceremony the selfless actions of 12 OC Transpo employees who went above and beyond the call of duty to provide aid and comfort to residents in need
“Our transit employees provide the public with safe, reliable and courteous service to help them get to where they need to go, when they need to get there,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “Despite the demands of the job, the people being recognized here today noticed something out of the ordinary and took the time to respond in a thoughtful, professional and inspiring way.”
OC Transpo bus operator Maryanne Ryan was named the 2013 Transecure Employee of the Year. Ms. Ryan was recognized for her role when she helped a family in need one evening in September 2013. While in service on Route 168, Ms. Ryan noticed a house that had the roof engulfed in flames. She immediately contacted Supervisor Jason Moreau in the Transit Operations Control Centre to tier emergency personnel. With no passengers on board, Ms. Ryan immediately ran to the house to wake the family and get them out of harm’s way. Ms. Ryan kept them safe by using our bus as a shelter for the family while they waited for the Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) to arrive. Fire investigation determined that a ceiling fan had caused the roof fire that had spread into the walls.
“As Chair of the Transit Commission, I am incredibly proud of the work that is done on a daily basis to serve the needs of our customers,” said Councillor Diane Deans, Chair of the Transit Commission. “Every employee who makes a Transecure call contributes to the safety and well-being of residents and visitors to the City of Ottawa.”
The Transecure program is a community watch program on wheels. OC Transpo employees look out for the safety of all community members and, as a result, become the eyes and ears of the community. They notify emergency services when required and assist individuals who are in distress, offering a safe haven in any OC Transpo vehicle.
