Ottawa – Mayor Jim Watson today proclaimed May 13 Ottawa Walking Day along with Councillor Mathieu Fleury, member of Ottawa Board of Health, Dr. Vera Etches, Associate Medical Officer of Health, Gottawalk and other community partners to promote walking as an accessible and sustainable mode of transportation that improves the health of residents and communities.

“Ottawa Walking Day is an opportunity to celebrate the City of Ottawa’s work in making Ottawa a walking-friendly city for its residents and numerous visitors,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “Last fall, the City of Ottawa received a silver-level designation by WALK Friendly Ontario – the highest level awarded so far to an Ontario municipality. As a city, we know that good street design and multi-use pathways help local communities, businesses and the environment.”

Ottawa Walking Day features many events for all ages, including hundreds of people taking part in one of five International Walking Festival Walks along the Rideau Canal and children across the city participating in one of several StoryWalks®hosted by Early Years Centres. AStoryWalk® is an opportunity for children and families to experience reading a book together while walking through a park, trail or neighbourhood, with each page of the book placed on a board and posted along a trail.

“Walking is affordable, accessible and promotes good health,” said Councillor Fleury. “Walking with others or replacing some trips in the car with a walking trip can help address current high rates of obesity and physical inactivity and associated chronic disease in our city.”

“Ottawa Walking Day is a wonderful opportunity to share how walking for fun, fitness and friendship helps make people of all ages healthier, along with the communities where we live, work and play,” said Graham Fawcett, President of the Ottawa International Walking Festival.
