Ottawa – Murals will brighten up two City of Ottawa underpasses this summer as part of a new streetscape initiative announced by Mayor Jim Watson at today’s meeting of City Council.

The City of Ottawa will soon be seeking artists to paint murals on the underside of Metcalfe Street, where it passes under the Queensway, and Riverside Drive where it passes under Bronson Avenue. The two locations were selected with the cooperation of Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation and the National Capital Commission.

“I can’t wait to see the result of this extraordinary partnership between three levels of government and the city’s artistic community,” said Mayor Watson. “Similar to the artwork under Highway 417 on Preston Street in Little Italy, these murals will beautify and enhance key gateways to the City with images that reflect and depict local culture.”

Each location will feature a mural celebrating the 150th anniversary of Canada’s Confederation in 2017 on one wall of the underpass. Following neighbourhood-specific public consultations, local artists will install a community-inspired mural on the opposing wall of each underpass.

A Request for Qualifications will be released in May and the artwork is expected to be completed by the end of August 2014.

“This project aligns with so many City priorities,” said Councillor Keith Egli, Chair of the City’s Transportation Committee. “Outdoor murals have proven to be effective in managing graffiti vandalism, supporting arts and culture and contributing to economic development.”

“These murals can reinvigorate main streets and brings vitality and civic pride to community cores,” said Councillor Mark Taylor, Chair of Community and Protective Services. “Among these other benefits, this project complements the City’s commitment to supporting local artists.”
