Ottawa – Mayor Jim Watson and Michael Maidment, Executive Director of the Ottawa Food Bank, are pleased to co-host this year’s Mayor’s Rural Expo and Food Aid Day on Friday, June 6 (7 a.m. to 2 p.m.), to celebrate Ottawa’s rural communities and area food producers.
The event will also support the Ottawa Food Bank.
“I am pleased to co-host this event again this year,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “Ottawa has a rich rural history. Today, rural communities continue to play an integral role in making Ottawa’s economy and culture vibrant, diverse, and resilient. This event celebrates rural businesses and local growers and producers, while helping a great cause - the Ottawa Food Bank.”
The event kicks off with a $5-pancake breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m., supplied by Stanley’s Olde Maple Lane Farm. The event is being held with the support of Ottawa’s rural councillors: Councillor Doug Thompson (Chair of the Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee), Councillor Eli El-Chantiry, Councillor Scott Moffatt and Councillor Stephen Blais.
The Food Aid barbeque lunch, hosted by The Works, is planned for 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. A $10-ticket will get participants a burger, a bag of chips, and a drink. All proceeds from the day will go to the Ottawa Food Bank.
“I am pleased how the entire Ottawa community – urban and rural – comes together to help the Ottawa Food Bank,” said Mr. Maidment. “Food Aid, now in its tenth year, is an important annual event to help us raise the funds required to purchase beef from area farmers to help local families.”
Individuals who cannot make the event but wish to make a $10 donation to the Ottawa Food Bank can do so on their mobile device by texting “BEEF” at 45678. See more details at mobilegiving.ca.
The event also features live music, entertainment, celebrity cow-milking contests, and displays that feature many businesses, festivals and artisans from Ottawa’s rural communities. The expo booths will be located at Marion Dewar Plaza and inside City Hall between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.
The Mayor’s Rural Expo and Food Aid Day kicks-off a busy weekend of events at City Hall – which includes Doors Open/Meet Your City Services exhibition on Saturday, June 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the Ottawa 2017 Ideas Forum on Sunday, June 8, from 1 to 3 p.m., in the Council chamber (Andrew S. Haydon Hall). Residents are invited to join the forum of business and local arts and culture leaders in discussing opportunities to leverage events and activities to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday.
