Ottawa – United Way Ottawa presented the City of Ottawa with a City Builder Award in the category of Best United Way Campaign, during their annual Community Builder Award Gala this evening at the Ottawa Convention Centre. The Award recognizes the City’s 2013 Employee campaign.
“United Way Ottawa has changed the lives of so many in our community by providing support to those who need it the most” said Mayor Jim Watson. “The City of Ottawa is honoured to receive this recognition for such a worthy cause.”
Councillor Mathieu Fleury and Councillor Mark Taylor, Honourary Co-chairs of the City’s 2013 United Way Campaign, along with City staff, were in attendance to accept the award. The Community Builder Award recognizes exceptional achievement by an organization that has contributed in a significant manner, and with creativity, motivation and dedication to the success of the United Way’s mission.
“City employees did an amazing job planning and participating in events, and donating directly to United Way through payroll deduction knowing that their contributions are going directly to helping people and changing their lives,” stated Councillor Fleury.
“This year’s ‘Giving is Groovy’ theme inspired staff to have some retro fun while raising much-needed funds for the community,” said Councillor Taylor. “From a chili cook-off to a cricket tournament, City staff, managers and elected officials together raised funds for the many programs and services provided through the United Way.”
“Tonight, we paid tribute to the incredible contributions of City of Ottawa employees, who have helped change over 17,500 lives for the better in the last decade in our community,” said Michael Allen, President and Chief Executive Officer, United Way. “All of our award recipients are at the heart of what makes this city special. They recognize that for a city to be truly great, it must be great for everyone and their actions reflect this commitment.”
The City of Ottawa invests in 72 of the 108 frontline programs and services where there is a United Way investment, and senior staff participates in 16 United Way committees.
This year’s City of Ottawa United Way campaign raised $519,007, exceeding the campaign’s fundraising goal. City employees have raised more than $6.6 million for the United Way since 2001, when it was designated as the City’s corporate charity of choice.
