Ottawa – This year’s Bruce Timmermans Award winners – Sarah Partridge (Individual) and Trips for Kids Ottawa (Organizational) – highlight community involvement and continuing a legacy to introduce cycling to future generations.

“The winners of this year’s Bruce Timmermans Awards are a testament of the spirit and dedication of the people in our city,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “The contributions of these dedicated people help promote cycling and make our city more cycling friendly for all residents to enjoy.”

Sarah Partridge received the individual category honours for her founding and continuous work with Vanier Cycles (a sub-committee of the Vanier Community Association). Her work has involved organizing the Vanier Vélofest, canvasing community input on enhancing cycling routes and infrastructure, supporting the City’s Safer Roads Ottawa Program, and creating synergies and communications in the Vanier community.

Under the organizational category, Trips for Kids Ottawa was recognized for their work in introducing children and youth, who would not otherwise have the opportunity, to mountain biking and experiencing outdoors through organized outings and after-school events. The two co-founders of this non-profit group, Cat Weaver and Mario Theoret, also aspired to have their students develop self-esteem and leadership skills along with an appreciation for health and wellness, nature, and community involvement.

Tragically last fall, Mario Theoret was struck and killed while cycling to work. However, Cat and the other Trips for Kids volunteers rallied from this devastating event and kept Mario’s legacy alive and moving forward. In fact, the house that Mario purchased five years ago was inherited by the group and is now the headquarters for this special non-profit cycling group.

“Creating cycling programs and infrastructure is a community matter that requires community involvement,” said Councillor Keith Egli, Chair of the Transportation Committee. “The recipients of this year’s awards are true community leaders that both educate and inspire others. Ottawa’s reputation as a cycling-friendly city is a true testament to their efforts, as well as other dedicated residents in our community.”

Plans are now underway to present awards to this year’s recipients.
