Jamie Collie’s house has been quiet for two days.
When the 42-year-old came home Sunday morning, his back door was open and inside, his three puppies were missing.
Collie said he was gone only an hour for groceries. He left the mother loose and her three Italian Mastiff pups closed in the room. The father, he took with him.
Collie speaks methodically when recalling his return to his Maitland home
“I see the mother running around in the yard and then she runs at the car when I’m pulling in. I can she see she’s really distraught.”
He walked to the door, taking in the shards of glass scattered on the porch and inside the house, the glass portion of the door punched through.
His TV and iMac were untouched, nothing else was taken. Collie remembers walking in, and seeing the door keeping in the fawn-coloured pups was ajar.
The litter – two females and male – were gone.
“It’s weird. I’ve been with the puppies since they were born,” said Collie of the now 10-week-old puppies. “I’d get up with the mother every time those puppies were hungry at night – four and five times a night for almost a month.”
“I didn’t’ realize how attached I was to them.”
He said an ATV was stolen from his house a week before, and he’s told the OPP of his suspicions, but he’s still waiting to hear of any leads.
“With no witness it’s hard for them,” Collie said. He has since posted calls for information on Kijiji and Reddit. The Ontario Provincial Police would not comment on the case.
Though Collie hasn’t received any hard tips, he says he was touched by the kind words of so many strangers.
“I was almost in tears yesterday, I got so much response.”
He said he hopes he hears something soon, so he doesn’t have to tell his 12-year-old daughter the bad news.
“No questions asked, if someone can just return them, I am offering a cash reward,” he said. “I don’t know if they’re being looked after. I’m worried for them.”
“I just hope they come home.”
