The city has launched a $4.6-million lawsuit against a company for its role in the “troubled” Airport Parkway pedestrian and cycling bridge.

Mayor Jim Watson made the announcement Tuesday during a meeting of the city’s finance committee.

The city has filed a claim against WSP Canada Inc., the company formerly known as Genivar, for costs the city says have resulted from the company’s ill-fated design.

“This multi-million dollar claim demonstrates our commitment to holding outside consultants accountable for the role that they played in this troubled project.” the mayor said in a statement.

Council directed city solicitor Rick O’Connor in December to seek recovery from Genivar and any other party for the additional costs associated with the construction delays and changes to the design of the bridge.

The city’s claims have not been tested in court.

Construction on the project — which is already years late and millions of dollars over-budget — was halted last fall, but began again in April.

Engineering firm Delcan was brought in after the original firm, Genivar, was fired by the city last fall.

The project is expected to be three years late, meaning it could be completed late this year at the earliest, and is $4.7 million over its $6.5-million budget.

The project was originally supposed to be completed in 2011.
