The most promising place to watch Tuesday’s provincial leaders’ debate has got to be Pub 101. The ByWard Market pub usually has its big screens tuned to sporting events, but starting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, it bar will be showing the debate because, after all, this is Ottawa.

That a pub in this oh-s0-political town is showing an election debate isn’t so unusual. What makes for potential excitement at Pub 101 is who’ll be there.

It turns out that, apparently unbeknownst to either of them, Liberal candidate (and current attorney general) Madeleine Meilleur and Progressive Conservative Martin Forget have both invited their supporters to join them at Pub 101 to watch the debate. The candidates are running in Ottawa-Vanier, a riding that includes the ByWard Market, so it’s not a surprise that the teams would gather in the city’s most popular entertainment district to cheer on their respective leaders. But it’s an amusing co-incidence that both camps chose the same pub to gather their tribes.

I expect the Tories will make cracks about Liberal supporters for paying for their drinks with credit cards (“Those Liberals — always spending money they don’t have”), while the Grits are sure to mock their rivals by ordering a “Hudakian” pint (that’s eight theoretical beers for every real one).

Other than the actual CBC studio where the leaders are physically debating, I can’t think of a place I’d rather be to watch to the political fireworks, both on screen and off.
