Something fishy is happening at the Rideau Canal.

An official-looking sign warning against the use of the canal due to an oil spill appears to be a hoax, say both TransCanada and Parks Canada.

The sign, spotted Wednesday morning on a canal bridge near downtown Ottawa, says “Notice: No river use until further notice due to oil spill.”

It features a TransCanada logo and a number to TransCanada’s “community relations” line which when called goes to a media relations desk.

Though murky as usual, no oil was visible on the canal water.

A spokesman for Parks Canada, which manages the Rideau Canal, had no knowledge of the sign.

TransCanada didn’t know about the sign either. A spokesman says there are no pipelines in the area that could cause an oil spill. He says this isn’t the first time he’s heard of a prankster putting up a sign like this, or distributing fake door hangers from the corporation in Ottawa neighbourhoods.

Parks Canada confirmed the canal remains open for business as usual.
