Ottawa police began searching a Vanier park Monday in connection to an unsolved 2009 homicide.

Officers with the emergency services unit cordoned off a large swath of Richelieu Park and began searching with metal detectors for what’s believed to be a firearm that may have been used in a fatal shooting that took place at what was then Bar 56 in the ByWard Market in May 2009. The search continued into Wednesday evening with officers saying they could return Thursday.

Police would only officially say that they were conducting an evidence search in the area related to an ongoing investigation.

A gunshot wound to the stomach killed Mohamed Jama Ali, 26, after a fight broke out at the club around 1 a.m. on May 7. Police at the time believed a beer bottle was thrown and that quickly escalated into someone pulling a handgun and firing, leaving patrons in the dimly lit bar only seconds to make key observations on what was happening and who was responsible.

Ali, a Somali refugee and member of the Ledbury Banff Crips, a gang then known for its involvement in prostitution, guns and hard drugs such as cocaine, was known to police. The young man, who went by the nickname Casper, stumbled into the street after being shot but later died in hospital.

Another man, believed to have been an off-duty bouncer, was also shot in the arm, but his injuries were non-life threatening.

In 2010, Ali’s family insisted that police knew who fired the shot that killed Ali. Police said at the time that through interviews they were piecing together what roles various people who were at the bar played in the moments that led to the shooting.

In 2011, police offered a $50,000 reward for any information that led to the arrest and conviction of Ali’s killer.
