Before you let a friend borrow your car, make sure they aren’t a speed demon.

Oh, and make sure their driver’s license hasn’t been suspended. You might end up vehicle-less for a month with more than $1,000 in fines to cough up.

Gatineau police stopped a 38-year-old driver yesterday near 858 Boul. Maloney Est for going almost 100 km/h on a street with a 50 km/h speed limit and for passing other cars illegally. They then found out that the Gatineau man’s license had been suspended — twice — by license regulator Société de l’assurance automobile Québec.

The man was fined $2,257 and a total of 14 demerit points for four infractions.

The owner of the vehicle was fined for two infractions, too: First, for letting someone whose license had been suspended use their vehicle, and second, for having a windshield that didn’t meet regulations. That set the owner back $1,052.

The car was seized by police and will be held for 30 days.

Gatineau police have put out a friendly reminder that you can check the validity of your Québec driver’s license by calling 1-900-565-1212.
