A former adviser to Prime Minister Stephen Harper has been committed to stand trial on allegations of influence peddling.
Bruce Carson is accused of using his connections with the government to help an Ottawa water filtration company to secure contracts to provide purification systems to First Nations reserves.
One if the allegations is that a 22-year-old former escort who the then-66-year-old Carson was dating would have received a 20-per-cent commission on every contract.
Carson had once worked as an aide to the prime minister, but was no longer working in his office at the time of the alleged offence in 2010.
Ontario Superior Court Justice Jonathan Brunet concluded Thursday after hearing three days of testimony from the former escort, the co-owners of the water company and officials at Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development that there was sufficient evidence to send the matter to trial.
The reasons for Brunet’s decision, and the evidence of the witnesses, are covered by a routine publication ban on preliminary hearings.
A trial date will likely be set later this year.
