The 10th annual Food Aid Day kicks off this morning in true Canadian style, complete with pancakes, maple syrup and the spirit of giving.
The event, organized by Ottawa Food Bank, raises funds for the similarly named Food Aid program, which aims to help struggling families include meat in their diet.
Organizers say the goal for 2014 is a cool $175,000, compared with $160,000 last year.
The goal keeps increasing, organizers say, since the price of meet continues to climb. Ten years ago cows cost between $400 and $500, but now the same cow can cost more than $1,500.
The money means the program can buy cows, process them locally and then freeze and send out to families in need.
Starting bright and early at 7 a.m., the festivities continue until 2 p.m. with a BBQ lunch, and the “Mayors Rural Expo,” all at city hall.
It’ll feature live music, a celebrity cow-milking contest and displays from artisans that made the trek into town from Ottawa’s rural communities.
And if you can’t make it out, remote donations work too. If you text “BEEF” to 45678, you’ll make a $10 donation. More details at mobilegiving.ca.
