Eighty children, 26 gallons of paint and loads of sunscreen and water were in hot demand as the pavement in front of Elmdale Public School was transformed over several hours on Saturday into a colourful mural.
The project, the brainchild of Katie Paris, past president of the Wellington Village Community Association, and watercolour artist Jennifer Nicol, was an opportunity to bring together the community to create a lasting artwork and to send a message to drivers to slow down during rush hour.
The winning composition was chosen by the elementary schoolchildren and features an image of the Earth in the centre of the mural surrounded by four large whimsical trees and children of various ages dressed in hockey and cycling gear and an older couple out for a stroll.
Nicol began drawing a chalk outline at 6 a.m. on Clarendon Street and by 9 a.m. children from ages four to 18 and their parents came out in droves to help paint.
“Katie approached the city about the Art on the Street project and they approved it and also gave us a grant. It’s a wonderful day,” says Nicol of Flying Colours.
Three other neighbourhoods in Ottawa will take part in similar projects this summer.
