Ottawa – Eleven of Ottawa’s most courageous and quick-thinking young residents were honoured at the City of Ottawa’s 16th annual 9-1-1 Children’s Achievement Awards, presented today at Ottawa City Hall.

Since it was established in 1998, the 9-1-1 Children’s Achievement Awards, in partnership with Bell Canada, annually recognizes children under age 12 who effectively use the 9-1-1 service.

Mayor Jim Watson was joined by Councillor Mark Taylor, Chair of Community and Protective Services Committee, and Councillors Stephen Blais, Eli El-Chantiry, Rick Chiarelli, Diane Deans, Steve Desroches, Mathieu Fleury and Katherine Hobbs to present awards to recipients, who all called 9-1-1 at some point in 2013 when faced with an emergency.

“Today is a reminder from these 11 amazing young residents that Ottawa’s future will be as bright as our past,” said Mayor Watson. “These children are responsible citizens right now and their actions have made Ottawa a safer place.”

The City continues to reach out to all residents—not just children—on how and when to use the 9-1-1 service. The service should only be used for emergency situations. Misuse of the 9-1-1 system or accidental calls can result in delays in responding to real emergencies.

“Congratulations should also go to the parents, teachers and anyone else who effectively taught these 11 children how to properly use an essential City service,” said Councillor Taylor. “The 9-1-1 service is one we all hope we’ll never need, but it’s comforting to see a generation of children growing up with the confidence, the wisdom and the skills to use it effectively when it’s needed.”

Also participating in the event are John deHooge, Chief, Ottawa Fire Services, Jennifer Bionda, Deputy Chief, Ottawa Paramedic Service, Mike Flanagan, Superintendant of Ottawa Police Services, and Pierre Poirier, Chief of Security and Emergency Management, and Bell Canada Regional Director, Community Affairs, Sandy McDonald.
