Ottawa police said Tuesday they were asking for the public’s help in their search for an “armed and dangerous” Devontay Hackett, wanted in weekend post-prom stabbing of 18-year-old Brandon Volpi outside Les Suites Hotel on Besserer Street.

Hackett, 18, is wanted on a charge of second-degree murder, police said. He is described as a light-brown skinned male, six feet tall and weighing 135 pounds. He has short brown hair and brown eyes.

Police asked that anyone with any information on Hackett’s whereabouts to call the Ottawa Police Service major crime section at 613-236-1222 ext. 5493, or Crime Stoppers 613-233-8477 or toll-free 1-800-8477.

Police were called to the downtown hotel, just steps away from the ByWard Market’s bars and late-night eateries, around 3:30 a.m. Saturday for reports of a stabbing. Volpi later died in hospital, hours after attending his high school prom at the National Arts Centre with his graduating class. The students of St. Patrick’s High School were holding their prom after-party at the hotel, along with students from other high schools, including St. Pius X High School.

The development in the investigation into the third homicide of the year comes after police obtained video surveillance footage. Police would only say that they were reviewing the footage, but the Citizen has learned that the footage led to identification of persons of interest, one of whom was believed to be the wanted young man.

Classmates of Volpi told the Citizen that while he was a protector to all friends, he had been in a fight in recent months after someone allegedly stole hundreds of dollars from his locker.

Various versions of what ultimately led to the altercation among several young men in front of the downtown hotel in the early morning hours Saturday have been circulating among students. Some have alleged that a rivalry between schools came to a head; others have said Volpi was stepping in to protect a friend who was scared and being threatened when Volpi was dealt the fatal stab wounds to his neck and chest.

Students at St. Pat’s will hold a memorial for their slain classmate this week. A funeral is planned for Friday morning.
