Ottawa – City Council today approved seven new asphalt hot boxes and a new asphalt spray unit in a proactive move to repair potholes 12 months of the year.
The new units will assist asphalt heated in hot boxes provide a much improved alternative to the traditional cold patch repair used primarily for repairing potholes in the winter months.
The new spray applicator unit will be part of a pilot project that will allow Public Works crews to more thoroughly clean out a pothole and apply a special coating to seal the hole after it has been filled.
Asphalt reacts to changing weather conditions as well as the stress caused by large vehicles driving over the area. With City crews filling a greater number of potholes in recent years the addition of these units will help them keep up with the demand.
In addition to the pothole maintenance effort a record $50 million has been budgeted in 2014 for road resurfacing projects across the City.
The total investment for the eight pieces of equipment is $360,000
