Ottawa – Mayor Jim Watson and City Manager Kent Kirkpatrick presented the 2014 City Manager’s Award for Excellence (CMAE) at today’s City Council meeting. The annual CMAE is comprised of four categories and represents the highest distinction employees can receive through the City’s corporate recognition program.
The CMAE provides employees with the opportunity to nominate co-workers and managers who consistently go above and beyond in improving the workplace or contributing to a better community in one of four categories: Making People a Priority, Demonstrating Leadership, Turning Ideas into Results – Community, and Turning Ideas into Results – Internal.
“This year’s recipients are shining examples of the pride and dedication exhibited by all City employees in providing consistently excellent service to Ottawa’s residents,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “I am happy for this opportunity to celebrate some of the outstanding individuals who create an energy that is invaluable to the City.”
During the presentation, the award in the category of Making People a Priority was presented to Aideen Reynolds. Ms. Reynolds, a member of the Healthy Sexuality and Risk Reduction Unit of Ottawa Public Health, was praised for her advocacy on behalf of the city’s at-risk residents. Her efforts to open a dialogue with these often marginalized residents have led to improved harm-reduction health services.
In the category of Demonstrating Leadership, the 2014 CMAE was awarded to Mona Monkman, Deputy City Treasurer of the Corporate Finance Branch. Ms. Monkman continues to raise the calibre of municipal finance as both a leader and a mentor, and has distinguished herself in her role as a key point person for all financial aspects of the Ottawa Light Rail Transit project.
This year’s CMAE for the category Turning Ideas into Results was modified to ensure that both internal and external initiatives related to innovation were acknowledged. In the internal category the award was presented to the Private Parking Enforcement Agency Program Team. The team developed a standardized ticketing system for all private parking facilities to ensure residents and visitors have clear and fair recourse for disputing tickets.
The second CMAE award for Turning Ideas into Results – celebrating initiatives within the corporation – was given to Lorraine Whyte, a leader in designing and delivering the City’s eLearning program. eLearning is both cost effective and flexible, offering employees the opportunity to take and revisit training based on their own schedules and operational needs. It is a system that will impact how training is delivered for years to come.
“This is the eighth annual City Manager’s awards, and every year we do this I continue to be impressed by the outstanding quality of the nominees,” said City Manager Kent Kirkpatrick. “I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to the award recipients and to all the nominees for their hard work and dedication.”
June is the City of Ottawa’s employee recognition month, and a fitting time to present these awards for outstanding accomplishments.
