Ottawa – Lees Avenue from Chapel Crescent to the Transitway will be fully closed as of Monday June 16, for approximately 13 weeks to replace the overpass over Highway 417.
All vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists will be detoured until the work is completed. Vehicle traffic will be diverted to Main Street and Greenfield Avenue. Pedestrians and cyclists will be detoured along the Rideau River multi-use pathway via Robinson Avenue.
The existing Lees Avenue bridge structure over Highway 417 will be removed starting Saturday, June 21 to Sunday, June 22. Further information about this closure is available in the City’s online newsroom.
A one-lane reduction on Robinson Avenue will be required for a one- to two-week period, a few times during the construction on Lees Avenue.
In addition to the overpass replacement, construction in the area will include sewer and road rehabilitation.
During this time, the City of Ottawa will also be reconstructing Lees Avenue between Main Street and Chestnut Street. The work will include replacing existing catch basins and installing new catch basins, replacing fire hydrants and streetlights, replacing sidewalks and curbs, and reconstructing and resurfacing the road. This work will be completed at the end of November 2014.
With all of the construction-related activities underway, residents are encouraged to be flexible with commuting times, stagger work hours or use alternative means for travel. The public is asked to consider options such as transit, walking, cycling or carpooling.
The City of Ottawa has tools on ottawa.ca to help motorists and transit users plan their routes and manage their commute including:
• OttawaNav – the City’s mobile application for real time construction and traffic information.
• City of Ottawa Traffic Report – outlining citywide road closures, traffic restrictions and detours
• Travel Planner at octranspo.com – transit users can chart and plan routes
• Interactive traffic map – showing construction areas and live traffic cams throughout the city
• Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) cameras
• Cycling maps and information – detailing bicycle pathways and lanes throughout the city
