With a light rain falling, family and friends gathered at a church in Ottawa’s Little Italy on Friday morning to say goodbye to Brandon Volpi, the 18-year-old St. Patrick’s high school student who was stabbed to death at a post-prom party last weekend.
Media were not allowed to attend the service at the St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.
Outside the church, grieving friends and relatives embraced in the drizzle, their colourful umbrellas a stark contrast to their mourning clothes. Several people clutched red roses and many of those attending appeared to be Volpi’s high school classmates.
The hunt for the police suspect in the slaying, meanwhile — fellow high school student Devontay Hackett — is continuing.
Police were called to Les Suites Hotel on Besserer Street, on the edge of the ByWard Market, in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Volpi had been dealt fatal stab wounds to his neck and chest. He died in hospital hours after attending prom at the National Arts Centre with his graduating class.
The students of St. Patrick’s high school were holding their prom after-party at the hotel, along with students from other high schools, including St. Pius.
Various versions of events have been circulating among students about what ultimately led to the altercation among what some witnesses said were as many as 20 young men outside the hotel lobby early Saturday. Some have alleged that a rivalry between schools came to a head while others said Volpi was stepping in to protect a friend who was scared and being threatened.
Police have named Hackett as a suspect and say he is considered armed and dangerous. He is being sought on a Canada-wide warrant for second-degree murder.
