Mona Daoud was repulsed after she discovered a “mummified” squirrel nailed to a tree in her townhouse complex Tuesday morning.
She said her seven-year-old daughter, Sophia, first spotted the creature while waiting at the bus stop near Heatherington Road and came running to her mom yelling: “Come look at this! Come look at this!”
“I was shocked,” Daoud said. “I pulled her out of the way. I didn’t know if it was still infected.”
Daoud said described the tiny corpse as “mummified,” not rotten, and perfectly placed.
Daoud said she was concerned about her daughter, who loves animals, because “I didn’t want her to think there were sick people out there in the world.” The 33-year-old mother said she sent Sophia off to school and reassured her that she would handle the problem.
Daoud admitted that she didn’t know what to do at first and was just going to leave the squirrel there. But soon after she called police. She said police suspect that kids in the neighbourhood found it and that construction workers had nailed it to the tree.
“Why would they nail an animal to a tree at the height children could reach and see?” she said. “Why not put it into the garbage?”
Daoud said she found the incident disturbing and “a little bit twisted.” Even talking about it gave her goosebumps, she said.
Police told Daoud that people would come to remove the squirrel from the tree, but as a 10 a.m.it was still there.
