Ottawa police have asked for the public’s help finding a would-be robber who was driven off by the broom handle-wielding owner of the shop he targeted earlier this month.

Police say a man with a shirt pulled over his head entered a Glebe convenience store on Third Avenue at about 8 p.m. on June 2.

The man, who is likely between 20 and 25 years old, brought out a handgun and demanded money.

The suspect tried to put the shop owner in a choke hold while pressing the gun into the owner’s bank.

Police say “the handgun was not believed to be authentic by the store owner.”As the two approached the cash register, police say the owner grabbed a broom handle and fought off the robber.

During the scuffle, the shirt came off the suspect’s head, and video surveillance in the store captured a brief image of his face.

He fled the scene in a black Pontiac G5, which was waiting outside. Police say that vehicle was stolen from a parking garage on Cedarwood Avenue apartment building in the afternoon, between June 1 and 2.

The suspect is described as having a slim build with an “afro” hairstyle.

This youtube video, released by the Ottawa Police Service Robbery Unit, shows the attempted robbery and image of the suspect:

Anyone with information on the robbery attempt is asked to contact the Ottawa Police Service robbery unit at 613-236-1222 ext. 5116 or Crime Stoppers at 613-233-8477 (TIPS) or toll free at 1-800-222-8477.
