Steven Helfer, 24, has been sentenced to two years in jail, minus the eight months he has already served, for the severe beating of Breezy the dog.

The judge has also ordered a three-year period of probation, non-communication orders and a 25-year ban on owning animals.

The crown had asked Helfer be banned from owning animals for life. Also says he should serve four years in jail.

The maximum sentence for this crime is five years in jail, plus a lifetime ban from owning animals.

Helfer’s lawyers had argued for a sentence of three-and-a-half months on top of the eight months he has already spent in custody.

With credit for time served, Helfer will serve 361 days for attack plus four months for unrelated break and enter.—

Helfer’s attack warrants custodial sentence to denounce and deter such behaviour, Alder says.—

“This was a senseless attack, purely out of anger at his mother,” says judge.—
