Although still only a tiny fraction of the overall vote, the number of declined ballots soared in last week’s Ontario election.
According to updated though still unofficial numbers posted by Elections Ontario, 33,399 voters refused their ballots at polling stations on June 12, compared with just 2,335 in 2011.
How much of the increase was due to voter dissatisfaction and how much to sometimes-controversial campaigns to increase awareness of the right to hand back an unmarked ballot was not immediately clear.
More to come.
