Giving $400,000 to help the YMCA renovate two floors, which could shelter 30 homeless families, would be a good use of the city’s money, according to the city’s community and protective services committee.

The committee voted unanimously on Thursday to contribute towards an expansion of the Y’s shelter space, which already has $550,000 in private funding going towards it. The city’s funding will require final approval from council.

“This is a new opportunity that’s very exciting,” administrator of housing services Janice Burelle told the committee. “They have onsite counselling, they have laundry services, they have kitchen facilities.”

The Argyle Avenue YMCA already has two floors that house 30 homeless families. It’s one of the ways the city has cut down on the number of homeless families staying in motels, from a high of 150 in mid-2012. There are now an average of about 60 families staying in motels, Burelle said.

“It also makes financial sense: $400,000 to support 30 families,” Burelle said, adding it would cost millions of dollars to build a shelter for that number of people.

Committee chair Mark Taylor said the city should still be working towards further reducing the number of motel stays.

“The goal is motel zero,” he said.

The committee also approved giving Burelle the authority to execute an agreement with the YMCA. To prepare for more families at 180 Argyle Ave., the Y would need to renovate and move administrative staff to rental space. As well as the initial cost, there would would also be an annual per diem of about $240,000 that would have to be paid to the Y.
