The two Ottawa paramedics critically injured in an explosion during a training exercise emerged from the fog of heavy sedation Thursday enough to interact with their chief.

Ottawa Paramedic Service Chief Anthony DiMonte said outside the Ottawa Hospital’s General campus that the condition of the paramedics had improved, but they were cautiously optimistic about their recovery.

“I must tell you, yesterday was a bit of a difficult day when you see two of your members arrive in your vehicles with staff taking care of them and they are both sedated, unconscious, pretty rough shape,” DiMonte said. “This morning it’s a completely different view.”

DiMonte said the paramedics had been weaned off the drugs that kept them sedated overnight and were alert when he visited them on Thursday morning. Since the paramedics were still intubated, they couldn’t talk but that didn’t stop them from communicating with their family and the chief.

Photos: Scene of training exercise where five first-responders were injured

Two police officers and three paramedics were injured in a training exercise on June 18, 2014 on March Road. Two of the paramedics were critically injured.

Using a laminated card provided by the hospital, the paramedics pointed to the words yes or no to answer DiMonte’s questions.

The injured were among a group of Ottawa police, RCMP officers and paramedics taking part in a forced-entry exercise at an abandoned house on March Road in Kanata. Shortly after 10 a.m., a ball of fire sent hot gas into the faces of two of the paramedics.

These two paramedics, Supt. Craig MacInnes and Reid Purdy, suffered the worst injuries. The pair were initially brought to the Ottawa Hospital’s General campus intensive care unit on Smyth Road in critical condition with second-degree burns on their hands, the backs of their legs and others areas of their bodies. Their condition was later described as “very serious” but stable. On Thursday their condition was still serious but they were conscious and alert.

The third injured paramedic, five-year veteran Bradley Ross, a primary care paramedic with the tactical unit, jumped in to help his colleagues after the blast.

DiMonte wouldn’t say much about Ross’s actions, citing the Ontario Ministry of Labour and Special Investigations Unit probes, but said Ross was in the same environment as some of the Ottawa police officers when the explosion occurred.

“His reaction was immediately to go to his two colleagues,” DiMonte said. “I can tell you doors were being broken down by the Ottawa police members, the Mounties and our tactical members to get in there and support.”

The two injured Ottawa police officers, Const. Chris Lennon and Sgt. Marc Clement, were treated for smoke inhalation and minor injuries. They were released from hospital Wednesday afternoon.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the incident because of the injuries to the paramedics, who are civilians.

Ottawa police said they were on the scene of the explosion on Thursday to forensically map the scene for their parallel investigation.

Police Chief Charles Bordeleau told reporters at the scene of the blast on Wednesday that the training was a routine exercise with very stringent safety protocols. Police seek out locations with abandoned buildings where the property owner allows them to conduct exercises to give them a more real-life training experience.
