Ottawa – Mayor Jim Watson joined Ward Councillor Peter Clark (Rideau-Rockcliffe) to mark the beginning of the assembly of the Coventry Pedestrian and Cycling Bridge. The bridge will be a key community improvement for residents of Alta Vista, Rideau-Rockcliffe and Overbrook, VIA Rail travellers, and event attendees at the Ottawa Stadium.
“This bridge will be yet another important link in our growing pedestrian and cycling network,” said Mayor Watson. “The improved connectivity between the communities north and south of the highway has been a key priority for Council and one that I am pleased to see being delivered.”
The Coventry Pedestrian and Cycling Bridge will improve connectivity and accessibility between the Overbrook community and the Ottawa Stadium, the VIA Rail station and the future Tremblay Station of the Confederation Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project. The bridge will have fully accessible ramps, and will connect to the existing multi-use pathway along Tremblay Road and future bicycle lane on Coventry Road.
This bridge was built in four pre-fabricated sections. Over the course of the next four days they will be raised into place on the four concrete pillars that were completed last year. The bridge will be complete and ready for community use by early 2015, and will continue to open throughout the construction of the Confederation Line.
Councillor Peter Clark noted the safety improvements that this bridge will provide. “Currently residents of my ward have to cross multiple busy intersections and highway ramps to cross south to Trainyards or the Transitway,” he said. “This new connection will be safer and more convenient, particularly for children and older adults.”
The Coventry Pedestrian and Cycling Bridge is an Ottawa on the Move project. Ottawa on the Move is about keeping our community and economy moving forward through strategic investments in a number of transportation, water, and sewer projects to build a better city and create jobs.
