An Ottawa supply teacher who was found guilty in March of sexually assaulting and touching five Grade 3 students in two schools where he was teaching was sentenced Friday to one year in jail and two years’ probation.
Superior Court Justice Paul Lalonde said 53-year-old Yousef Chaouni-Benabdallah, who emigrated to Canada from Morocco in 1991, was in a position of trust.
“His students looked to him for guidance and direction and he failed them,” the judge said. “He acted deliberately, in a calculating manner, to commit these offences.”
His victims, all eight-year-old girls, attended Sawmill Creek and Odyssée schools, where the offences took place between late 2010 and the spring and early summer of 2011.
