A Via Rail train headed for Ottawa and Montreal struck and killed a pedestrian near Kingston Sunday afternoon.
“Today’s incident is a tragedy and our thoughts go to the family,” said Via Rail spokeswoman Mylène Bélanger. The train hit the pedestrian 20 minutes outside of Kingston just after noon.
Bélanger said the train was still stopped where the collision occurred and must wait for a coroner before the 189 passengers headed for Ottawa and 206 headed for Montreal could continue their trips.
“We will not be able to detrain passengers,” Belanger said just before 2 p.m. “It’s not in a safe location to take passengers out of the train.”
The Ottawa passengers will continue to the Brockville station, where they will then be driven to Ottawa by bus.
Bélanger said Via Rail is co-operating with Kingston Police on an investigation, but it is still too early to say what happened.
More to come.
