It was a deadly start to summer.
Seven people lost their lives in accidents in a little over 48 hours in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. Five of those deaths occurred in separate road accidents.
While the number of collisions isn’t unusual, it is concerning, said Sgt. Kristine Rae of the Ontario Provincial Police.
It’s important that motorists stay vigilant and to drive safely as smaller, sub-collisions can happen when people aren’t paying attention on the roads, Rae said.
Rae said she hopes to see that number of fatal collisions decrease as they “affect more than just the victim involved.”
In May, there were five road fatalities in the entire month in Eastern Ontario, she said.
On Friday, just before 4 p.m., 75-year-old Patricia Burrell of Cardinal died when her Buick SUV left County Road 22 near Crowder Road in Grenville County, striking a tree before coming to rest against a culvert. Burrell died at the scene. Her passenger suffered only minor injuries.
At about 11 p.m. Friday night, a man was killed after he lost control of his car, struck a tree and ended up in a ditch full of water in the city’s rural west end.
Ottawa Fire said they received a report of a rollover on Loggers Way, near Galetta Side Road, toward Fitzroy Harbour around 11:45 p.m. Fitzroy Harbour resident, Neil Paquette, 33, died in the crash.
At 7 a.m. Sunday, OPP responded to a call of a single-vehicle collision on Butler Road in the township of Admaston Bromley. A blue Toyota pickup truck was travelling southbound around 7:15 a.m. when it struck culvert and flipped over several times. The driver of the vehicle, identified as 27-year-old Schuyler O’Brien of Greater Madawaska Township, died at the scene.
At 3 p.m. the same day, OPP were called to a motor-vehicle collision on Highway 15 at Leo Lake Road, northeast of Kingston. They said an SUV travelling northbound collided with a Volkswagen Jetta.
Four people in the Volkswagen suffered minor injuries and the lone occupant of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators were at the scene Sunday to determine the events leading up to the collision.
Hours later, a 53-year-old was driving westbound on Highway 148, west of Chemin Maple in the Pontiac area, when his 1998 Ford Taurus veered off the road, according to MRC des Collines.
They said preliminary evidence suggests the man may have been speeding and lost control of the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene around 5 p.m. The victim’s name has not yet been released.
Meanwhile Ontario’s Ministry of Labour was called to investigate after a fatal crash at the Cornwall Motor Speedway during a sanctioned auto race around 8: 15 p.m. Sunday. The OPP were also called to the scene.
The victim, Danny Lefebvre, 23, of St-Louis-de-Gonzague, Que. struck a cement barrier during the race. He was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead. A post-mortem examination is being scheduled.
In addition to the five collisions, a Via Rail train struck and killed a pedestrian near Kingston on Sunday. The more than 150 passengers on their way to Ottawa were delayed for more than four hours.
