The lock stations along the Rideau Canal will stay open later starting this weekend, Parks Canada announced Monday, partly retreating from a decision to shorten the hours last year.

Boaters and tourism groups objected to the shorter hours last year, and blamed them for a record low number of boats passing through the canal in 2013: just 56,750, fewer even than used the canal in 2004, when a strike disrupted lock services.

So, the announcement said, the canal’s locks will open a little later in the day but also stay open later. Between June 27 and Sept. 1, “the busy summer season,” boats will be locked through from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday to Sunday (plus holidays, including Labour Day).

From Sept. 1 to Oct. 13, the hours will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday to Sunday (plus Thanksgiving).

It works out to an extra 112 hours of service this year compared with 2013, Parks Canada said. The announcement said it’s part of a national conservation plan advanced by the Conservative government to try to link Canadians and nature.

Last year, Parks Canada said the decision to shorten the lockstation hours was unfortunate but there just wasn’t the money to operate them longer, particularly when a plan to increase the locking fees was scrapped by Peter Kent, who was then the minister in charge of Parks Canada.

A spokeswoman couldn’t immediately say how the longer hours are being paid for this year but said she’d find out. This story will be updated with that information.
