For the second time in a week, an inquest into the death of an inmate at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre has been announced.

The inquest, mandatory under the Ontario Coroners Act for in-custody deaths, will investigate what led to the death of Renaud-Louis Grenier, 55, on Oct. 18, 2011.

A jury will also make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.

The date and time of the inquest will be announced at a later date.

Last Wednesday, an inquest was announced into the death of an accused drug trafficker who choked to death after trying to swallow a plastic egg full of drugs.

Gregory Jonathan Ingram, 33, died on June 24, 2009, at The Ottawa Hospital’s General campus. He was taken there from the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre where he was being held following his arrest in Cornwall on drug charges.

Ingram’s mother, who was arrested with her son, said last week she hopes a coroner’s inquest will expose the circumstances surrounding her youngest son’s death.

Ingram’s mother Jeanne pleaded guilty to possessing OxyContin pills and was sentenced to four months in jail.
