Former Ottawa teacher Michael Slater, now 74, has been jailed for three years for sexual offences against two students.
A jury convicted Slater in March of raping one victim between September 1968 and June 1970 in a classroom at Elizabeth Park School for children of military personnel and at a house in Alta Vista.
Elizabeth Park School was operated in the 1960s by the Department of National Defence at Canadian Forces Base Uplands.
The victim had alleged he contracted two sexually transmitted diseases as a result of the rapes, requiring several hospital treatments.
Slater pleaded not guilty to five counts, including indecent assault, gross indecency and buggery involving one victim, now age 57, and another complainant whom Slater assaulted about 20 years later.
The names of both victims are protected by a publication ban.
Slater’s family was in court to hear the sentence Tuesday.
Until 2009, the 57-year-old had told only his wife about the rapes.
When the victim’s parents had both passed away by 2009, he decided to report the assaults to police.
“It would have destroyed my mother,” he said. “To the day my father died, I’m sure he would have tried to kill Mike Slater.”
Before he reported the sexual assaults, he told both of his children what happened.
He then went to Slater’s home to confront him and tell him he was going to the police.
