Ottawa –The City of Ottawa’s Commemorative Naming Committee is conducting public consultations on a proposal to name a new park at 208 Spindrift Circle, “Lela Scharf Park”.

Lela Scharf Park – (Rideau-Goulbourn – 21)

In recognition of Lela Scharf’s extensive community service, the City of Ottawa has been asked to name a new park at 208 Spindrift Circle as Lela Scharf Park.

Lela devoted herself to her family and her community. Her contributions during the Depression included providing food for anyone who asked for it and producing and selling low-priced produce to families in need. In addition, one of her major contributions included caring for a large number of foster children. Her compassion even led her to taking care of a family of 12 children at one time. She also extended shelter to anyone in need, including housing 40 strangers in her home during a 1947 snow storm.

Her exceptional contributions can be seen in the community’s response towards the various events she held, including family picnics, Christmas dinners, square dancing parties, barn dances and much more, all of which promoted community bonding.
