Light rail construction is paying off for the Ottawa economy, Mayor Jim Watson said Thursday.

Watson said the value of contracts “committed” to Ottawa firms has topped $360 million, and the majority of contractors working on the downtown tunnel and other aspects of the first phase of the LRT project are from within the region.

A Spanish-led consortium has a $2.1-billion contract to complete the first phase. Watson said construction on the 2.5-kilometre underground corridor that is a key link of the project should reach the midway point by late summer. Above-ground work east and west and a large maintenance facility on Belfast Road are other parts of the first phase.

To build the tunnel and three underground stations, crews are working from east, west and centre.

A road collapse blamed on an uncharted old construction pit slowed work at the eastern entrance, but other parts of the tunnel are on schedule, the consortium has said.

In a release, Watson said the entire first phase is expected to spur 20,000 “person-years” of direct and indirect employment.
