On the day Elizabeth Le Geyt was born, Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo, triggering the First World War, and the world still had passenger pigeons.
Well, a passenger pigeon, at least. Martha, the last survivor of a species that once darkened the sky over North America by the billions, had a few more months to live in her cage at the Cincinnati Zoo, where she died on Sept. 1, 1914.
Le Geyt, who wrote the Citizen’s birding column for 39 years until retiring last year, was born June 28, 1914.
“It’s absolutely amazing,” Le Geyt said. “I used to think that my parents had lived thought a lot of change — the first car, the automatic gramophone — but I think that it was nothing compared to what we’ve seen in the last 25 years.”
Though troubled by arthritis and, more recently, gout in her hands, Le Geyt remains sharp and connected.
“My mother used to talk about growing old gracefully. Well, I don’t care much about being graceful, but I am grateful that I do have my mind.
“I decided a long time ago that if I was going to go on living, I would have to be a part of the world and not turn into a hermit.”
This year, she published her memoir — Bird Lady: A lifelong love affair with birds.
Le Geyt’s life spans four monarchs, 15 prime ministers, 17 U.S. presidents and five Ottawa Senator Stanley Cups championships. Not only has the passenger pigeon disappeared, but so has another ornithological marvel, the ivory-billed woodpecker, which hasn’t been seen since 1987.
She shares a birth year with Yankee outfielder Joe DiMaggio, Clayton ‘the Lone Ranger’ Moore, polio vaccine discoverer Dr. Jonas Salk, poet Dylan Thomas and boxer Joe Louis.
Le Geyt has five sons, eight grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Many of them have come from across North America to celebrate her birthday at open house Saturday at Orchard View Living Centre in Manotick from 2 to 4 p.m.
