For those seeking relief from the scorching summer sun, there are a total of 29 indoor and outdoor pools in Ottawa, at least eight of which will be open on Canada Day.
The temperature jumped into the 30s over the weekend with the humidex making it feel closer to 36 C on Sunday. The city issued a heat advisory, which will be in effect until further notice.
A no-swim advisory was also lifted at Ottawa beaches, which include Britannia, Mooney’s Bay, Westboro and Petrie Island. While some people might revel in it, Ottawa Public Health warns that extreme heat can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and even death.
During a heat advisory, it’s important to drink water, avoid strenuous physical activity outdoors, find shade, spend time in an air-conditioned location and don’t leave children, the elderly or pets unattended in a car, even with the windows open. If you do plan on going outside, remember to wear a hat, light and loose clothing, sunscreen and sunglasses.
Environment Canada has also issued a special weather statement for the Ottawa area as hot and humid conditions are expected to continue Monday. Canada Day will be muggy, but a cold front will bring an increased chance of showers and thunderstorms.
