A tornado warning has been issued by Environment Canada for parts of Ottawa and areas west of the city.

Residents of Kanata, Orleans, Ottawa North, Renfrew Arnprior and Calabogie and people are being urged to take cover immediately.

A severe thunderstorm that can produce a tornado was being tracked by meteorologists. Moving eastward at about 60 kilometres an hour, the storm was near Renfrew as of 1:21 p.m.

The Environment Canada warning states this is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation. If people hear a roaring sound or see a funnel cloud, swirling debris close to the ground, flying debris or any other threatening weather they should immediately take cover.

Rooms on lower floors, away from outside walls and windows are the safest places to go, according to Environment Canada. Basements, bathrooms, stairwells or interior closets are ideal. Those in mobile homes, vehicles, tents or trailers should move to stronger buildings if possible. If there are no buildings nearby, as a “last resort,” people can lie down in a low spot and protect their heads from debris, according to the warning.
