Ottawa’s transportation committee is looking into a proposal to ask the province to double speeding fines in school zones.
Coun. Allan Hubley, vice-chair of the committee, tabled the motion at a committee meeting Wednesday.
If the idea is approved by city council next week a letter will be sent to the province requesting a change to Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act.
A request had already been made before the June election, but a bill to amend the act died when provincial parliament was dissolved.
As it stands now, driving more than 10 km/h over the limit means a $70 fine for speedy drivers. On a regular street, the fine is $40.
