Ottawa – Today the Finance and Economic Development Committee (FEDCO) received a presentation and update on the opening and operation plans for the revitalized Lansdowne from City staff and the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG).

“The vision that has guided the design and construction at Lansdowne is solidly based on the values we put at the core of developing our city – sustainable, connected, accessible and healthy communities that protect and foster our local heritage and culture,” said Mayor Watson. “I am excited to welcome residents to Lansdowne, and together discover all that the new site has to offer, beginning this summer and for many years to come.”

The stadium, TD Place, is the first phase of the redevelopment to officially open on July 9, and it will host its first major event on July 18 when the Ottawa REDBLACKS play their first home game.

Lansdowne Park – an 18-acre public green space – will open with a community event to celebrate the heritage of Lansdowne on August 16, from 11a.m. to 3p.m.

The shops at Lansdowne will open later this fall, and residents of the new condominiums will start to move in early in 2015.

“For neighbouring communities, the reopening of Lansdowne Park comes with a series of new amenities and opportunities,” said Ward Councillor Chernushenko. “New green space, plazas, spaces for community programs as well as pathways that will better link the Rideau Canal to Bank Street. Lansdowne Park’s location next to the historic Canal and with so many pathway connections means biking or walking is an attractive option for visitors who want to spend a day at the park or take in its attractions.”

Programming and events at the new Lansdowne Park will begin later this fall when Ottawa’s third refrigerated outdoor skating rink opens. Lansdowne Park will also be an integral feature of Winterlude 2015. In addition, over 20 event organizers have already expressed interest in hosting events at the park, and several are confirmed for 2014 and 2015.

The City is pleased to welcome the Ottawa Farmers’ Market back to Lansdowne beginning in 2015 in the new, purpose built, Aberdeen Square. The committee also received a report today for an outdoor farmers’ market for up to seven days per week and a potential indoor farmers’ market in Aberdeen Pavilion on weekends from November to April. City Council will consider the licence for final approval at its meeting on July 9.

“The rejuvenation of Lansdowne has been many years in the making,” said Kent Kirkpatrick, City Manager. “City staff have worked tirelessly to bring this project to fruition. We have also worked collaboratively with many stakeholders and partners, and I would like to thank each of them for their contributions to completing the redevelopment at Lansdowne. As we turn our attention to operating these new facilities, those relationships will help us ensure a positive experience for every site visitor.”

“My partners and I are very excited to welcome Ottawa to the new TD Place this summer,” said Roger Greenberg, OSEG chairman. “We are very proud to be a part of restoring this historic site to a destination at the heart of our city.”
