Re: Do other drivers curse you?, July 4.
I fully agree with nine of the identified elements in this article’s list of dumb moves that infuriate drivers and make roads an angrier, more dangerous place. I take issue with No. 1 however, which is “Driving too slowly on highways.”
When speed is posted at 80 kilometres, the sign says maximum 80. Typically, highway regulations identify a minimum that is about 20 kilometres slower and you can be ticketed for travelling slower unless impeded by traffic.
One of the greatest contributing factors to traffic accidents is excessive speed — to encourage drivers to drive faster is irresponsible. We are seeing manufacturers building more and more features in their cars to accommodate people who don’t know how or don’t like to drive (cameras, accident warning systems, lane change risk warnings, parking assist) and it seems inappropriate to encourage people who would rather surf the Internet in their car than drive it to go faster.
Hog the left lane? No. Drive within the limits and follow items two through 10 listed in this article? Definitely.
